Integrated, Policy-Driven Secure Messaging, Encryption and Enterprise Rights Management
As email has become the preferred medium for business communications, organizations have become increasingly concerned about ensuring the security of individual messages. Email is now used to transmit both unclassified and sensitive or confidential information across all parts of the enterprise, including operational data, trade secrets, legal documents, financial information and human resources data.
The need to secure confidential information and comply with a growing body of regulations that govern the transmission of private data have made policy-based email encryption a "must have" feature of a complete messaging security solution. The Proofpoint Protection Server and Proofpoint Messaging Security Gateway meet these requirements with the industry's most powerful and flexible solution for policy-driven secure messaging.
Proofpoint Secure Messaging Overview
Through built-in secure messaging functionality adn through partnerships with best-of-breed secure messaging vendors, Proofpoint ensures that email is secure from prying eyes, compliant with all types of privacy and data security regulations and free from spam and viruses.
Native Secure Messaging Features
The Proofpoint Secure Messaging module, powered by Voltage IBE, adds powerful, policy-based encryption capabilities to your Proofpoint deployment, making ad hoc, secure communication just as easy as traditional, non-encrypted messaging.
Gateway-to-gateway secure messaging capabilities are standard features of the Proofpoint Protection Server software and Proofpoint Messaging Security Gateway appliance. Proofpoint's native gateway-to-gateway secure messaging features enable the automatic encryption of message destined for business partners who require a secure communications channel, without the need for senders or recipients to take any action:
- The Proofpoint Messaging Security Gateway appliance supports digital certificates and enables gateway-to-gateway secure transfer and receipt of email using the Transport Layer Security (TLS) standard. To further ensure the security of encrypted messages, the gateway also supports optional authentication of senders and receivers via TLS.
- Forthcoming releases of Proofpoint Protection Server include native support for the Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (S/MIME) standard.
Secure Messaging Alternatives
In addition to the Proofpoint Secure Messaging module, Proofpoint can also be deployed in conjunction with other third-party secure messaging, encryption and enterprise rights management solutions - from partners including Authentica, PGP Corporation, PostX Corportion, and Sigaba - to support a variety of desktop-to-desktop and gateway-to-desktop encryption applications. The combination of securing messaging features with Proofpoint's unique MLX machine learning-based content analysis capabilities, centralized policy management framework (the Proofpoint Messaging Security Console) and powerful content security capabilities enables:
- Easy creation, maintenance and enforcement of enterprise-wide secure messaging policies.
- Flexible, policy-driven encryption of email messages based on message content, attachment content, sender, or recipient.
- The ability for end-users to encrypt messages directly from their desktops, or automatic encryption based on keywords detected at the gateway.
- Compliance with data security and privacy regulations such as HIPAA and GLBA which require protected health information or protected financial information to be transmitted securely.
- Enhanced protection for sensitive and confidential information. The Proofpoint Digital Asset Security module enables encryption policies to be applied to messages based on the presence of "classified" contents or attachments.
Secure Messaging Deployment Scenarios
Proofpoint supports nearly any desired secure messaging deployment, enabling automatic, transparent and confident encryption of messages in any environment. Supported encryption scenarios include:
Gateway-to-Gateway Encryption
Native support for SSL/TLS and S/MIME encryption requires minimal setup and secures messages during the most vulnerable part of the message transport as messages are transmitted across the Internet.
Gateway-to-Desktop Encryption
Proofpoint's integration with leading secure messaging solutions allows for convenient receipt of encrypted messages using both "pull" and "push" scenarios, without the need for client-side code:
- Pull based communication: Recipients of encrypted messages are notified that they have received a secure message and are provided with a link to view the message securely. Upon successful authentication, users are allowed to view messages and reply over a secure browser session.
- Push based communication: Recipients are provided with an encrypted copy of the message. Upon successful authentication, the user is granted permission to decrypt the message received locally in their inbox.
Desktop-to-Desktop Encryption
Proofpoint's integration with leading secure messaging solutions allows for complete, end-to-end message encryption:
- Encrypted messages entering or exiting the organization can be detected and disposed of based on policies and end-user permissions. For example, an outbound encrypted message can be allowed or quarantined for further review based on the identity of the sender.
Inbound Encrypted Message Handling
Encrypted messages are received by the Proofpoint Protection Server or Proofpoint Messaging Security Gateway and routed to the appropriate secure messaging partner device for decryption. Messages can then be scanned for spam, viruses and policy compliance before being delivered.
Outbound Encrypted Message Handling
Outbound message handling: Outbound message can be scanned for email hygiene and/or policy compliance before being routed to the appropriate secure messaging partner device, where they are encrypted and optionally digitally signed before transmission.
Proofpoint's Secure Messaging Certification Program
Proofpoint has partnered with the leading secure messaging, encryption and enterprise rights management companies to ensure full compatibility between these secure messaging products and Proofpoint's messaging security solutions. Most notably, Proofpoint incorporates Voltage Security's Identity-Based Encryption (IBE) technology as part of the Proofpoint Secure Messaging module. The integration of Proofpoint's enterprise-messaging security features with Voltage IBE provides customers with a complete solution for email security - delivering anti-spam, anti-virus, content compliance, content security, regulatory comliance and email encryption features in one highly-effective, easy-to-deploy platform.
Additionally, encryption vendors Authentica, PGP Corporation, PostX Corporation, and Sigaba participate in Proofpoint's Secure Messaging Certification Program. Each vendor has worked with Proofpoint to certify - through lab testing and onsite customer deployments - that its solutions are fully compatible with the Proofpoint Protection Server software and Proofpoint Messaging Security Gateway appliance. The certification process includes testing for interoperability between Proofpoint and each partner's secure messaging solutions over a wide range of policy and routing use cases - ensuring a rapid and seamless deployment experience for joint customers.
